Équiterre welcomes the start of a comprehensive review of the federal environmental assessment regime

Published on

Ottawa, 20 juin 2016 - Équiterre is glad to finally see the beginning of this much-needed review of key federal environmental assessment processes under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the National Energy Board, the Fisheries Act and the Navigable Water Protection Act.

This review process will be led by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with Cabinet Ministers of Transport, Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guards, Natural Resources, Science and Indigenous and Northern Affairs.

“Broad public consultation in key to ensuring the transparency and rigor of this important review” stated Sidney Ribaux, Executive Director of Équiterre. “This is the beginning of delivering on the federal government’s commitment to restore Canadians’ confidence in the environmental assessment process.”

“This long-awaited review is necessary to repair the damage done by the previous government who gutted these key pieces of federal legislation on these issues” added Steven Guilbeault Senior Director of Équiterre. “The federal government now has the opportunity to bring federal environmental assessment processes in line with our recent climate change commitment under the UNFCC in Paris. This includes ensuring all energy infrastructure projects are subjected to a rigorous science-based climate test” added Mr. Guilbeault.

The expert panels are expected to deliver their recommendations to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change by January 2017.
