Energy Inspection for low income households

Through its support from the Agence de l’efficacité énergétique, Équiterre offers free energy inspections to low income households, enabling them to reduce their energy consumption. During this inspection, Équiterre offers weather-stripping services and advice for the home. A team composed of an advisor and a technician will visit you at home. The advisor analyzes your energy consumption habits and makes custom recommendations enabling you to save. The technician makes a brief report on the shape of the lodging and of the work to be carried out in priority. The technician then installs energy saving devices (such as a reduced flow shower nozzle) and minor weather-stripping around the lodging. Lastly, you are given various informational documents. This visit, which lasts about one and a half hours, is available to residents of the greater Montreal area.

To qualify for this free energy inspection, you must meet these three criteria:

1 – You live in the City of Montreal (as newly defined)
2 – The energy utility bills (electricity, gas, oil) are in your name
3 – You are a low income household (as defined by the Agence de l’efficacité énergétique, and to be validated by our information agent)
4 – If you qualify, please contact us at (514) 522-2000, extension 246, to set up an inspection time.
5 – If you do not qualify, please read the information on Energy Efficiency Intervention visits and Training below. This is a similar service offered by Équiterre.

Energy Efficiency Intervention visits and Training

You wish to improve your home comfort, reduce air infiltrations and save on your energy bill? However, you are not eligible for the Energy Inspection to low income households. Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, Équiterre offers weather-stripping and energy evaluation services (for a fee). A team will visit your home and will start by analyzing your energy consumption habits and make custom recommendations enabling you to save. You will then receive a brief report on the shape of the lodging and of the work to be carried out in priority. We install small energy saving devices (such as ventilators and a reduced flow shower nozzle) and weather-stripping around the lodging (doorsill, sealer, plastic storm-windows, et cetera). The length of the visit varies depending on the size of your lodging and the shape it is in, and of the number of windows and doors to be worked on. This service is offered to residents of the greater Montreal area.

Please note that it is recommended to consult the Rénoclimat first for a more thorough energy inspection prior to renovation work, another service offered by Équiterre. Click here for more details.

The Home Rénoclimat

The rénoclimat visit consists of a professional analysis of your home which follows the standards of the Office of Energy Efficiency, and the Agence d’efficacité énergétique du Québec. Équiterre is a certified agent for the program for the Montreal, Montérégie and Québec region.

During a visit lasting approximately two hours, an Équiterre advisor conducts a series of tests in your home. The advisor uses an infiltrometer to identify air leaks. Then, using cutting edge software, the advisor prepares a detailed report of your energy consumption and of the work to be done in order to make your home more energy efficient. Finally, the advisor gives you an EnerGuide home sticker, indicating the current energy rating of your lodging compared to other similar lodgings, as well as your target rating once the recommended improvements are carried out.

If the recommended improvements are carried out, the advisor will make a follow-up visit and will award you the new rating for your home.

Depending on the differential between your initial rating and your final rating, you could be eligible for a subsidy from the federal government and, if you heat with electricity, for one from Hydro-Quebec.

These services are offered year-round.
