Action of the Month: Stay warm and save energy this winter

Winter is well on its way. Snow was forecast for the first time last weekend—you may have watched some of the early flakes fall.

Here are three ways to winterize your home and save energy.

 

 

 

HEATING = 2/3 OF YOUR HYDRO BILL

Heating accounts for two thirds of the average household’s energy bill. Did you know you can reduce your carbon footprint and stay warm at home?

Check your temperature
For optimal comfort, adjust the temperature according to the time of day, occupants’ age and activities. Different rooms can be set at different temperatures, too.

  • When you’re at home, room temperature should be 18°C to 21°C. For every degree over 20°C, you use 2% to 5% more heating energy. Wear warm, comfortable, cozy clothes and you definitely won’t be cold.
     
  • Set the temperature to 21°C or 22°C in the bathroom and study.
     
  • At night or when you go out, turn the thermostat down 2°C to 4°C.
     

Top tips for reducing your energy use
1- Reverse your ceiling fans to circulate warm air through the room;

2- Change your furnace filters every three months during the heating season.

AIR INFILTRATION: THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF ENERGY OVERCONSUMPTION

Air infiltration is the main reason people use too much energy for heating.

You can seal small leaks with permanent or temporary caulk, weatherstripping and door seals. The good news is weatherstripping is cheap and easy to install.

Pro tip: To check for air leaks, walk around your home with a feather, candle or thin piece of paper. If it wavers, there’s an air leak and a poorly insulated spot. Thoroughly check the attic hatch, power sockets, light fixtures, edges of walls, floors and ceilings, and window and door frames.

WINDOWS: SOURCE OF HEAT LOSS

Old windows can account for 25% of a home’s heat loss.

There are many things you can do to make them more energy efficient: install an aluminum storm window or an additional glass pane for the winter months, for instance.

How to prevent condensation on windows and air leaks

- Measure indoor humidity levels with a hygrometer. High humidity may increase your heating bill.

- Put plastic film over your windows. Read about plastic film’s other benefits here.

- Insulate your windows by hanging heavy curtains.
