Equiterre to Harper government: Climate can't wait

Published on

Montreal, May 3, 2011 – Canadian voters gave Mr. Harper's Conservatives a majority mandate yesterday, prompting Equiterre once again to remind the government that the climate can't wait any longer. Our organization is ready with solutions that will help Canada catch up in the fight against climate change and regain credibility on the international stage.

"The official opposition will no doubt agree with us: Canada must immediately address environmental issues and implement an effective, concrete plan to fight climate change. The newly elected NDP members, including many from Quebec, have been assigned the mission of advancing the interests and concerns of the citizens, notably in terms of the environment," said Steven Guilbeault, deputy executive director of Equiterre.

After five years of a minority Conservative government, Equiterre will closely monitor the newly elected government to make sure that it respects the values of Canadians, in particular concerning climate change. "Democracy has spoken. The Harper government must now take responsibility and act concretely to protect the environment and the planet," said Steven Guilbeault.
