Profile of a volunteer: Mélanie

Actu - Sans eux, rien ne serait possible, les bénévoles!

Two years ago, out of a desire to give back to the community, Mélanie filled out a volunteer application on our website.

"It was my dad who first told me about Equiterre. I thought it sounded like a good cause," she says one noonhour over a picnic lunch outside the Centre for Sustainable Development (better known by its official name, the Maison du développement durable), the demonstration green building in downtown Montreal that is home to our head office.

Mélanie is a volunteer receptionist. Two days a week, she:

  • fields phone calls (in two languages)
  • responds to emails
  • receives visitors at the reception
  • handles mailings
  • helps team members with different projects, which adds an extra element of excitement to her work

What she loves the most:

  • feeling like part of a team
  • the bustling atmosphere
  • meeting new people

"The pay is non material," she says.

For us, having Mélanie at our front desk is a huge help, for which we are extremely grateful. Thank you, Mélanie! We couldn't do it without you.

Volunteering is...

  • acquiring experience
  • helping the environment
  • making connections
  • belonging to a team
