On Monday, June 4, thousands of Canadians responded to the call from environmental and social groups to speak out against the so-called federal budget omnibus bill C-38, which would weaken the nation's environmental review process.

Concerned citizens gathered across the country, from Vancouver to St. John's, to denounce the bill, which would put arbitrary timelines on reviews of pipeline projects, curtail the rights of environmental groups to participate in environmental hearings, and give new powers to the environment minister to forego environmental assessments for certain projects.

Hundreds of groups darkened their websites for 24 hours in virtual protest.

At the rally in Montreal, representatives from area groups, including Equiterre, posed in a cage on Ste-Catherine St. as a symbol of the limits that this new bill would put on their advocacy efforts.
