Durban ends in disappointment

Published on

Durban, the longest conference in the history of UN climate summits, has failed to result in an agreement that would limit the average global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius. Instead, it will permit an alarming rise of 4 degrees – moving us firmly into dangerous climate change territory.

There is, however, some good news from the conference, notably the creation of a new negotiating group, consisting of:

  • the Least Developed Countries (LDC)
  • the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS)
  • the European Union (EU)

This group put forward some interesting proposals that, if applied, would keep the temperature rise below 2 degrees, suggesting that there is still hope indeed in the fight against catastrophic climate change.
