New co-op facilitates entry into the carbon market

Published on

Fuel distributors will need to be in compliance with Quebec's new carbon market as of January 1. To make compliance easier, a new co-op, Carbone Coop, has been formed. A portion of its funds will go towards projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"Generating reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while easing entry into the carbon market for fuel distributors is a winning proposition for all. In addition to fighting against climate change and helping the carbon market succeed, it will generate economic benefits for Quebec," says Steven Guilbeault, cofounder and senior director of Equiterre.

When the carbon market goes into effect on January 1, fuel distributors will have to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the fuel they distribute.

La Coop Carbone is an initiative of Fondaction CSN, Mouvement Desjardins, La Coop fédérée, C3E and AQME.
