Where are we at with electric cars in Quebec in 2020? Second edition of Quebec’s Electric Vehicle Week kicks off

Published on

Montreal, October 16, 2020 – The 2nd edition of Quebec’s Electric Vehicle Week (EV Week Quebec) will get started on Monday, October 19, with actor/playwright Christine Beaulieu as spokesperson once again. This year’s activities and events will be held virtually.

“At this time when our modes of transportation have been turned upside down by COVID-19 and when gas guzzlers are rising in popularity, Quebec Electric Vehicle Week is a perfect time to stop and take stock: where are we at in terms of transportation electrification in Quebec? How can we make electric vehicles more accessible for those who have no alternative to driving in order to get around? There are many myths about electric vehicles that we need to unravel,” explains Christine Beaulieu.

EV Week Quebec, organized by Running Electric, will feature a number of virtual activities to help educate consumers about electric vehicles. It will also give them the opportunity to ask their questions directly to recognized experts.

Webinars, virtual information stands, a roundtable discussion on transportation electrification and a virtual quiz night to debunk EV myths will be open to the public.

“This year’s programming offers a comprehensive look at EVs and addresses controversial issues head on. Hopefully, it will help convince those who are skeptical and will help reassure others who are ready to climb aboard the EV train,” adds Christine Beaulieu.

Some facts at a glance:

  • Quebecers are keen on electric vehicles: 17% of passenger cars sold in Quebec in 2019 were plug-ins (23,000 units sold). Their market share rose to 21% for the first half of 2020.

  • There are currently over 40 models of EVs and plug-in hybrids.

  • Close to 77,000 plug-in vehicles are licensed in Quebec – an increase of nearly 50% in one year.

  • In Quebec, it costs about $2 in residential electricity to drive 100 km in electric mode. By driving electric, Quebecers save an average of $1,600 per 20,000 km driven.

  • Although EVs require more resources to produce, over their full life cycle they emit 65% less greenhouse gases in Quebec after 150,000 km and 80% less after 300,000 km (Ciraig 2016).
