The Save our Route Verte petition, with 48,000 signatures, calling on the Quebec government to save the Route Verte maintenance program was presented to 13 MNAs in as many regions on Monday. The petition is part of a campaign urging all political parties represented in the National Assembly to signal the importance of the Route Verte for all regions in Quebec. The future of this 5,300 km jewel of a bikeway, which passes through nearly 400 municipalities in 16 regions and 94 RCMs, should be a priority.
A year ago, the Quebec government announced that the $2.8M program to assist with maintenance, which was cost-shared with municipalities along the province-wide bike network, would be discontinued. By launching the Save our Route Verte petition last August, Équiterre joined over 160 municipalities that have adopted resolutions of support, as well as stakeholders in business, tourism, leisure and environment.
Équiterre and Vélo Québec would like to thank all citizens and people who use the Route Verte, as well as associations, public figures and business people that have mobilized to call on the government to preserve this jewel of Quebec tourism and economic development tool for our regions.
We now hope that our elected representatives will listen to the 48,000 voices that are have called for this bikeway, which is unique in the world, to be saved.
