Montreal, November 12, 2024 - From November 11 to 22, as the world gathers in Baku, Azerbaijan for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Équiterre will once again be among the environmental groups with access to the negotiations.
Équiterre’s Charles-Edouard Têtu, Climate Policy Analyst, and Marie-Eve Leclerc, Mobilization Project Manager, will be on site to help hold governments accountable, to explain and comment on the issues and the announcements, and to amplify the voices of the most vulnerable groups in the face of the climate crisis.
"The consequences of the climate crisis are affecting us now. Climate adaptation must have a central role in Canada’s climate plans, as well as in the discussions in Baku,” states Charles-Edouard Têtu.
“Canada has finally announced a coherent legal framework to cap greenhouse gas pollution from the oil and gas sector - the country's most polluting industry - an important step towards reducing the impact of the climate crisis and the cost of adaptation. But we can't stop there. After a year marked by the historic costs of extreme weather events, the acceleration of the energy transition must be at the heart of the international negotiations,” adds the expert.
A panel on climate adaptation
As part of the activities at the Canada Pavilion, Équiterre will be presenting a panel on climate adaptation on November 18. It will look at the issues associated with climate adaptation within the context of international climate negotiations and to help develop solutions in Canada and elsewhere.
The panelists will be:
Caroline Larrivée, Director of Scientific Programming, Ouranos
Noora Firaq, Deputy Managing Director, Climate Outreach
Marc Paasch, Global Director, Alternative Risk Transfer, WTW
