After months of deliberation, the Équiterre team has finally decided that the organization will cease its activities on the social network X. As of today, we will no longer be posting on this platform.
Why?
Because we value constructive discussions… and let’s just say that X has not been offering that kind of enriching exchange for quite some time. If you are active on the platform, you’ll likely agree with this assessment: the situation has also been deteriorating rapidly since Donald Trump’s election.
Hateful speech, threats, misinformation, insults, and personal attacks—once confined to the fringes—have now become the trademark of X.
The downside of this decision is that Équiterre is leaving behind nearly 24,000 followers and a channel that allowed us to engage with an audience that, let’s be honest, is often far from convinced about environmental causes.
The issue is that we can no longer justify providing content to a platform whose owner actively and openly promotes a discriminatory and dangerous political agenda. Continuing to post on X would go against our core values of social and environmental justice, and the cost of keeping this channel open now seems simply too high.
We are not alone in this decision: many organizations and individuals from the fields of science, arts, education, and media have announced their departure from X in recent days, both in Quebec and beyond. We humbly believe that Équiterre can use its influence and credibility to contribute to this movement.
That being said, we still have many other ways to communicate with the public in spaces that are healthier than X. From now on, Équiterre will share news, statements, and expert opinions primarily on Bluesky (as well as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn).
